Having Missed the Halftime Show...

Don't we have to give credit to whoever actually pulled off that All-Star game train-wreck? This might actually be one of those "'Round the World" phenomenons where it's so wrong in one direction that it actually circumnavigates back to an entertaining place. Like I mentioned, I'm afforded this theory by having not seen it, but Holy Buddha! The midget and rapping cowboy are horrible, but easily explained by common slow-witted bad taste. The Confederate soldier uniform though, at an NBA All-Star game in Denver (with that rich Civil War History!) is so wrong and absurd, it makes me think the conspiracy theorists are right and Andy Kaufman did fake his death.

The only thing I can compare this to is something I saw at a Patriots game two years ago. At every Gillette Stadium game, there's a group of 4 costumed Revolutionary War Minutemen roaming around the sidelines with their muskets. Whenever the Partiots score, they fire into the air in celebration. So far, everything makes sense (New England, the partiots, colonists), right?

After the Pats scored for the second time that day, the Minutemen shot into the air and then, suddenly, over the P.A. system came blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". The crowd immediately whipped into a frenzy. I looked down at the Minutemen to see three of them dancing and one of them playing his musket like it was a guitar. "Wow," I thought, "This is strange."

The only thing I can compare that feeling to is something Homer Simpson said to Apu before he went to a Civil War recreation. Dressed in a Confederate uniform Homer asked, "You sure you don't want to come along, Apu? We're going to need plenty of Indians to kill on the battlefield."

Apu's response: "That statement is so wrong, I don't even know where to start correcting it."

-Minutemen playing air guitar with a musket, while dancing to "Sweet Home Alabama" at a New England Patriots game? -A country band with a rapping cowboy flanked by a midget and a confederate-costumed guitarist at the NBA All-Star game? I don't know where to start.

Rock on...
